Collaborations
My last endeavor involved a collaboration in Dr. Jacque Gamino's Adolescent Reasoning Research Initiative (effective January 2022). This research initiative takes part in developing, testing and implementing; brain, cognitive, memory, and behavioral assessment and training protocols for advanced reasoning in youth.
Through implementing the SMART program (Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training) in Middle Schools around the country, we focus our expertise in strategic thinking and critical reasoning. In the last three years, Dr. Gamino has received more than $10 million in educational research funding to advance learning in youth across the country.
University of Texas at Dallas:
Undergraduate Success Scholars Mentorship Initiative
Being part of the leadership initiative involved participation in monthly trainings that focused on mentorship in both educational and personal environments. The role also exposed me to conferences which involve topics about the educational growth in under-represented and minority groups.
Freshman Mentorship Program
As a mentor in this program, the primary goal was to ease the transition of first-time college students into higher education. With this experience, different methods of mentorship are implemented and reflected on in order to provide the best academic and personal experience for students. Understanding of different learning abilities, discourse communities, and methodologies are all key to successful guidance.
Future Comets Program
This program's efforts are dedicated to middle school and high school students from under-represented communities. By exposing students to STEM education and collegiate academic advising, we hoped that minority group students can be better supported and equipped to pursue a higher level of education.
Developmental Neurolinguistics Lab
I had the privilege of working with the Developmental Neurolinguistics Lab at the Callier Center, which is led by Dr. Mandy Maguire. This Brain Lab focuses on research that pertains to working with children's linguistics and development as they age. The lab involves experimentation with electroencephalography (EEG) performance and analysis. The overall goal is to understand language acquisition and the brain processes connected to it.
UTeach Program
With this on field experience, I was given the opportunity to teach in different level settings. I collaborated with both peers and teachers to provide students proper and engaging lesson plans that encourage learning and exploration. This program also trained me to learn about the different learning styles to provide equitable education.
The Purpose
The above mentioned collaborations and experiences have provided me with the necessary knowledge to become a better educator and researcher. All of these involvement experiences have equipped me to understand how to involve all- mentorship, leadership, research, academic and personal support, into my investigation. These collaborations are all tied together around the common goal- better education, learning, and opportunity for growth.
